Biography
Seven seasoned performers from Colombia launched the vocal and instrumental folk ensemble Cigarra in 1986, seeking to pool their collective expertise. Grupo Cigarra gave its first public performance that October at the regional folk gathering known as Peña. The ensemble captured first prize at the inaugural Cresencio Salcedo Music Festival held in Bogota in 1987, thereby securing Cigarra’s position within the area’s music community. In 1991 the group took top honors at Cali's Second Latin American Music Contest.
