Brazilian vocalist GUAI delivers sophisticated yet ebullient performances that fuse samba, jazz, and Afro-Brazilian traditions into a distinctive crossover style. Her first album, Dama de Paus, appeared in 2015 and quickly drew critical notice.

Born Karol Guaitolini in Salvador da Bahia, she entered a household steeped in music, with a father at the piano and a singing mother. By age four she was already joining her parents onstage at dances and children’s matinees. Throughout her teenage years she refined her technique while absorbing the work of Elis Regina, Elza Soares, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, and Gal Costa. Even after enrolling in college courses on social communication and marketing, she kept music at the center of her life. In 2009 she produced the concert Eu, Ella & Elis: The Divas of Jazz, an explicit tribute to several of her foremost influences. Two years later she reached the finals of the 22nd Brazilian Music Award with her interpretation of Noel Rosa’s “Último Desejo.” The next year she returned to those same finals with a version of João Bosco’s “Coisa Feita.”

After relocating to Rio de Janeiro in 2013, she met Grammy-winning instrumentalist/producer Nema Antunes, who co-produced her debut album, Dama de Paus, released in 2015. The record highlighted her vibrant blend of samba, jazz, and Afro-Brazilian elements, earned her a 2017 nomination for Best Female Vocalist at the Brazilian Caymmi Music Award, and marked a decisive breakthrough. Around the same period GUAI moved to Lisbon, Portugal, where she continued refining her sound. She re-emerged in 2021 with her second album, again produced by Antunes and featuring additional contributions from Luiz Brasil, Teo Lima, Marcelo Martins, and others.
