Born Robert Lee Malcolm, the dancehall deejay known as Gully Bop first recorded under the name Country Man during the 1980s. In 2014 he moved from homelessness into sudden prominence when impromptu performances were captured and posted on social media. Resourceful producers took the a cappella vocals and placed them over new rhythms. By year’s end the Kingston native had issued several official Gully Bop tracks and further enlarged his following with a combative appearance at Jamaica’s Sting Festival. His rise persisted into 2016, when tracks such as “Pussy Specialist” and “My God Dem Nuh Bad Like Me” ranked among his most-played recordings, yet that same year Malcolm faced arrest on domestic-abuse and robbery charges brought by his manager and collaborator A’mari. The accusations were later withdrawn, allowing him to resume releasing material that included the singles “Secret Lover” and “Jamaica Nice” along with numerous joint projects.
