The roots of Gumption trace to Tennessee, where guitarist and vocalist Kurt Hagardorn teamed with bassist Gary Miller to launch a project. Finding no traction locally, the pair shifted to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in 1995 and soon brought in Jody Maxwell, the former drummer of Sex Police. With that roster complete and an approach shaped by the Kinks, Replacements, and Guided By Voices, the trio delivered its indie pop songs in shows alongside Superchunk and Butterglory. Following the self-issued debut single “Don’t Screw Up” b/w “Starting Line” in 1996, Gary Miller left Gumption in 1997 to attend graduate school. Aaron Oliva stepped in on bass, guitarist Dave Merritt expanded the group to a quartet, and Seriously Records issued the EP Ultramaroon later that year.
