Biography
Born as John Swail around 1940 in England, Darrell performed vocals during the early 1960s alongside Ray McVay’s ensemble. His discography from that period included the 1961 single “Daddy Cool” together with a 1966 rendition of “I’ve Been Hurt,” originally a hit for Bill Deal And The Rondels. Additional releases comprised “Turn To Me” and “Sing Me No Sad Songs,” the latter a 1969 composition credited to Elton John and Bernie Taupin that was pulled from circulation shortly after issue. Alongside several musicians, among them ex-members of Summer Set, he established the Guy Darrell Syndicate, whose repertoire featured “Birds Of A Feather”—with composer credit assigned to Joe South—and “Keep The Rain From My Door.” He further collaborated with Martin Jenner, Dave Green, Derek Elson and Graham Jarvis within the little-known progressive rock outfit Deep Feeling, which issued its lone album on DJM Records in 1971.
