Guy Wood composed the enduring standards “Shoo-Fly Pie and Apple Pan Pandy” and “Till Then.” Born in Manchester, England, he began performing on saxophone with local dance orchestras. During the early 1930s he relocated to the United States, where he joined the foreign-production units at both Paramount Pictures and Columbia Pictures. By the late 1930s and into the early 1940s he led a band at New York’s Arcadia Ballroom. His composition “Till Then” achieved three separate pop-chart successes: the Mills Brothers reached number eight in 1944, the Hilltoppers climbed to number ten a decade later, and the Classics peaked at number twenty in 1963. Additional credits include scores for Radio City Music Hall and the long-running CBS children’s series Captain Kangeroo. Guy Wood passed away at age 89 in East Hampton, New York, on February 23, 2001.
