Biography
Birmingham, AL-born Mike Thrasher relocated to Los Angeles in the early 1990s and soon connected with drummer John Boutin and bassist Matt Westfield. Together the three launched Gwenmars in 1995. Drawing from the Cure and Echo & the Bunnymen, the trio forged a guitar-driven strain of alternative rock whose shimmying pop melodies reflected those sources most clearly. After performing just three shows, the group landed a contract with Hollywood Records, which released their debut album, Magnosheen, the same year. Tours with Catherine Wheel and Filter came next, yet Hollywood’s interest faded and Gwenmars fell silent. Six years later the band returned via a new agreement with Dave Sardy’s SeeThru Broadcasting imprint and issued their second album, Driving a Million.
