Gypsy Soul is an acoustic rock outfit based in Washington state and built around the husband-and-wife team of Canadian-American singer and lyricist Cilette Swann together with Scottish musician and producer Roman Morykit. The pair first crossed paths in 1991 once Swann had traveled to Europe in search of her Celtic heritage; after several years performing in French jazz venues she continued her quest in Scotland, where she joined a band that included Morykit’s older brother. Their first recording, Test of Time, appeared on Cabana Boy Records in 1996. Sanctuary, the follow-up, came out on Off the Beaten Track Recordings on 7 July 1998, and the Christmas set Sacred followed two months afterward. In 2000 their version of “Czardasz” was featured on French DJ Claude Challe’s compilation Lover-Dose, and that same year the duo issued their fourth album, Superstition Highway. The Journey, their fifth collection, was released by WorldSound on 24 September 2002, while a second holiday album, Amazing Grace, arrived on 5 November 2002. Off the Beaten Track issued the live recording One Beautiful Night in June 2004 as the group’s seventh album. Their eighth effort, Beneath the Covers: A Rediscovery, surfaced in April 2007 and contained interpretations of material originally recorded by U2, the Moody Blues, Chris Isaak, Stevie Wonder, the Beatles, Daniel Lanois, and John Denver alongside several original compositions. By that point their independently released albums had sold close to 100,000 units, and their songs had been licensed more than 100 times for motion pictures and television programs such as Providence, Felicity, Roswell, After Sex, Quicksand, and The Young and the Restless.
