Biography
Hagop Tchaparian, a British-Armenian musician, produces organic techno by merging field recordings and traditional acoustic instruments with analog synths and dance rhythms. Long associated with Four Tet and Hot Chip, he issued his first album, Bolts, in 2022 through Kieran Hebden’s Text Records.
During his teenage years Tchaparian performed guitar duties in Symposium, the London pop-punk outfit that drew lavish coverage from NME and Melody Maker. The band placed two albums and several singles inside the British Top 40, supported major U.S. acts including Red Hot Chili Peppers, No Doubt, and Metallica, and appeared on the American Warped Tour. After Symposium dissolved in 2000, Tchaparian grew weary of both the music business and guitar-centric styles, turning instead to electronic sounds and becoming a regular at Ministry of Sound and Fabric. He developed close ties with Kieran Hebden and Hot Chip, later serving as tour manager for each. In time he began assembling his own tracks, shaping techno around sampled dhol drums, zurna, and qanun. Text Records put out multiple Tchaparian singles plus a Four Tet remix of “Round,” paving the way for the October 2022 release of the full-length Bolts.
