The virtuoso trumpet artistry of Sweden's Håkan Hardenberger has spurred the creation of numerous fresh compositions for the instrument. Widely acknowledged among the foremost trumpeters globally, he maintains an extensive discography.

Born in Malmö, Sweden, on October 27, 1961, Hardenberger commenced trumpet lessons locally with Bo Nilsson at the age of eight and continued under his guidance for several years. He subsequently pursued advanced training at the Conservatoire de Paris under Pierre Thibaud, followed by further instruction in Los Angeles with Thomas Stevens. From an early stage, Hardenberger nurtured the goal of attaining elite virtuoso status; after completing service in the Swedish military's music brigade, he embarked on his professional path.

His debut recording appeared in 1985 on the BIS label, titled The Virtuoso Trumpet and featuring twentieth-century repertoire with pianist Roland Pöntinen. Hardenberger later joined the Philips roster, issuing multiple discs devoted to core trumpet literature that he has presented often in performance, while demonstrating a pronounced dedication to contemporary music beginning early in his trajectory.

He has solicited new pieces from composers spanning diverse idioms, among them Hans Werner Henze, Arvo Pärt, Toru Takemitsu, Sally Beamish, and Harrison Birtwistle, along with numerous Scandinavian figures. A particularly close tie links him to Heinz Karl Gruber, whose Aerial (1999) Hardenberger has presented more than sixty times. Engagements have encompassed leading orchestras worldwide alongside varied chamber configurations. In intervals between concerts, he instructs trumpet at the University of Malmö. Although his recordings have appeared on Decca, Ondine, Dacapo, and additional imprints, an enduring association with BIS has continued, culminating in the 2022 release French Trumpet Concertos. At that point his catalog encompassed roughly thirty entries.
