Hal Smith lent his talents to a range of roles over a long career in acting and voice work, among them Otis Campbell, the town drunk from The Andy Griffith Show, and the affable animated canine Goofy. Born in the Midwest, he supplied voices for multiple Hanna-Barbera animated series that debuted during the 1970s, some of which featured grating vocal performances and equally grating storylines. Walt Disney productions also featured his contributions to several children’s audio releases, notably adaptations of the Snow White and Winnie the Pooh stories. In the Duck Tales television series he voiced the characters Flintheart Glomgold, the cutthroat competitor of the miserly Scrooge McDuck, and the dim-witted inventor Gyro Gearloose. From 1987 onward he performed in the Christian radio program Adventures in Odyssey. Smith suffered a fatal heart attack during the first half of the 1990s.
