Biography
After serving as a principal songwriter on Metal Church’s opening pair of landmark releases, guitarist Kurdt Vanderhoof grew weary of constant roadwork and stepped away from the group to explore different musical directions that would keep him nearer to home. The outcome was Hall Aflame. Launched in 1989, the group also featured vocalist Ron Lowd, bassist Brian Smith, and drummer Tom Weber. In 1991 the quartet issued its bluesy hard rock album Guaranteed Forever through IRS and promoted the record by joining ZZ Top on the Recycler tour. The release struggled to find an audience, however, as mainstream focus had begun shifting toward the rising grunge movement. Hall Aflame disbanded in 1992 and stayed dormant for the next twenty-two years.
In 2023 Vanderhoof reconvened with Smith, newly recruited vocalist Scott Nutter, and drummer Bill Raymond to lay down material originally intended for the band’s never-recorded follow-up. Once together, strong creative chemistry, mutual goodwill, and abundant enthusiasm prompted the musicians to track those songs plus many additional tracks. What began as a studio endeavor quickly became a full band revival, yielding the twelve-song sophomore album Amplifire, released on Rat Pack in May 2024.
