Hangtown crafts a robust strain of Americana rooted in muscular rock that merges power pop sensibilities with the raw garage edge associated with Neil Young alongside the timeless Southern rock sounds pioneered by Lynyrd Skynyrd. The band took shape in 1998 once singer, songwriter, and guitarist Ted Lukas departed from his previous outfit, Barely Pink. Joining forces with Finn Walling on guitars, Mike Anderson on drums, and bassist Aaron Akers—who had also played in Barely Pink—Hangtown issued their debut album Here for Now during August 1999 via Blue Heart Records. That imprint had been established by Ronny Elliott, a seasoned figure in Americana who hailed from the same Tampa, Florida, scene. The release attracted sufficient notice for Hangtown to secure a deal with Black Dog Records, an operation launched by Cary Hudson and Laurie Stiratt, both formerly of the pioneering alt-country act Blue Mountain. Under that banner, the group put out 11 Reasons as their sophomore effort in January 2001. A legal conflict prompted their split from Black Dog before the year's end, even as they simultaneously launched into recording sessions for a third album.
