Biography
Hannah Cohen’s dreamy yet melancholic brand of indie pop first surfaced within New York City’s intertwined art and music communities at the start of the 2010s. Following the 2012 release of her spare debut Child Bride, which showcased her girlish vocals alongside yearning melodies, she received invitations to contribute guest vocals to projects by Glen Hansard, Bell X1, Benjamin Booker, and Kevin Morby. Her third solo effort, Welcome Home, arrived in 2019 and preserved the same soft-spoken, heavy-hearted atmosphere while expanding into lusher arrangements that incorporated synths.
Born in San Francisco, Cohen was surrounded by music from an early age because her father was West Coast jazz drummer Myron Cohen. Teenage modeling assignments took her overseas and eventually brought her to New York City, where she sat for portraits by Richard Prince, David Salle, and photographer Ryan McGinley. She also held a position at the historic Village Vanguard jazz club, forging connections with local musicians who later appeared on her first album. In 2011 she assembled a book of her own photography, some of it music-related, which was published under the title Fotografias. Brasil.
Thomas Bartlett, known as Doveman, produced Child Bride, which featured contributions from Sam Amidon, violinist Rob Moose, and drummer Kenny Wollesen before its 2012 release on Bella Union. That year Cohen also supplied backing or guest vocals on Glen Hansard’s internationally charting Rhythm and Repose, Martha Wainwright’s Come Home to Mama, and Julia Stone’s By the Horns, as well as on Hansard’s 2013 EP Drive All Night. Her second album, the more expansive torch-song collection Pleasure Boy, again produced by Bartlett, came out in 2015. Additional session work followed on releases by Kevin Morby, Sam Cohen, Adrian Crowley, and the Bartlett–Nico Muhly collaboration Peter Pears: Balinese Ceremonial Music, leading to her return with Welcome Home in 2019. Issued once more by Bella Union, the record was helmed by frequent collaborator Sam Owens, who records as Sam Evian.
