During a hiatus from Spiderbait and Regurgitator, bassist-singer Janet English and singer-guitarist Quan Yeomans launched the side project Happyland. The pair, then romantically involved, had first performed under the name The Shits before adopting the more viable Happyland. Their recordings fused the most frenetic and melodic elements of both parent bands, showcasing English’s highest, most girlish vocal register alongside Yeomans’ twitchiest, catchiest hooks. In 1998 Polydor issued the album Welcome to Happyland, after which the duo joined the Big Day Out tour circuit costumed as bears, bees, and assorted animals. They later contributed the track “Tintarella di Luna” to the 2000 soundtrack of Looking for Alibrandi. Once the relationship ended and each musician rejoined their original group, Happyland was discontinued.
