Biography
Harp emerged from the vision of musician and songwriter Tim Smith, who fused British folk rock with echoes of vintage alternative rock and prog rock. Employing acoustic guitar alongside wind instruments and keyboards, he shaped atmospheric textures on the project’s first full-length release, the 2023 album Albion, whose textures summon an earlier era even though contemporary tools and methods were employed to realize them.
Smith initially built his name inside Midlake, the Denton, Texas indie rock outfit he co-founded and fronted as lead vocalist. Formed in 2000, the group cultivated a devoted audience through its distinctive blend of indie rock, soft rock, and psychedelia. After signing with the British indie label Bella Union, Midlake achieved wider recognition when 2006’s The Trials of Van Occupanther and 2010’s The Courage of Others posted strong sales figures.
Smith left Midlake in 2012 during the writing of its follow-up album, an exit that overlapped with personal upheaval including the end of his marriage and a temporary return to his parents’ home. While outlining a solo project and slowly developing new recordings, he encountered Kathi Zung, an artist and puppet fabricator experienced in stop-motion animation. The pair married, after which Smith took on household duties and helped raise her two children. Because Zung is herself a musician, she joined the creative process; at the same time Smith absorbed the atmospheric approach of the Cure and the Cocteau Twins while retaining the folk and indie elements that had first guided the work. This combination produced a fresh and distinctive sound. Under the name Harp, the material finally appeared when Bella Union released the debut LP Albion in December 2023.
