Biography
Harpyie, a German ensemble, wove medieval motifs and visuals into an energetic fusion of symphonic and folk-metal sounds. Across the 2010s the group cultivated a loyal European audience by maintaining an active touring schedule, securing spots at major festivals, and issuing favorably received albums including Freakshow in 2015 and Aurora in 2019.
The band came together in 2011 in Bad Oeynhausen, an East Westphalian town, adopting its name from a creature of Greek myth. Its sonic identity revolved around folk instruments such as bagpipes, flute, and violin alongside the force of electric guitar, bass, and drums. Original members Aello on vocals, Mechthild on violin and vocals, Podargo on guitar, Gyronimus Basstard on bass, Ocypus on drums, and Michael von Ullrichstein on bagpipes recorded the 2012 debut Blindflug for the regional Trollzorn label and then moved to Metalville the next year.
Ahead of the subsequent record, Kelaino replaced Ocypus on drums and Garik Sturmbringer succeeded Ullrichstein on bagpipes; both appeared first on 2013’s Willkommen Im Licht. That same year Harpyie made its debut at the historic Wacken Open Air Festival. With Kayran now occupying the drum seat, 2015’s Freakshow introduced a darker, more metalcore-inflected direction that drew critical praise. The approach carried forward on 2017’s Anima, which also reduced the lineup to a quintet after Sturmbringer departed. Folk textures nonetheless endured on 2019’s Aurora, where hurdy-gurdy surfaced on several tracks.
