Biography
Harriet Krijgh has risen to prominence as a leading cellist in the Netherlands. She not only carries forward the legacy of her instructors but also directs her personal summer event known as Harriet & Friends. Her performance schedule has extended to distant locations including Vietnam. Beginning in her early twenties, Krijgh initiated recordings with the Capriccio imprint and subsequently contributed to Deutsche Grammophon and Orfeo catalogs. The Orfeo release from 2024 featured her in Sofia Gubaidulina's Triple Concerto for violin, cello, and bayan.
Born during 1991 in Zeist close to Utrecht within the Netherlands, Krijgh commenced cello instruction upon reaching five years of age. Admission to the Young Talent program at the Utrecht Conservatory followed four years afterward. Relocation to Vienna occurred in 2004, where she pursued training under Lilia Schulz-Bayrova and Jontscho Bayrova, enrolled at the Privatuniversität Wien, and participated in masterclasses led by Steven Isserlis, Clemens Hagen, along with additional figures. She has maintained residence in Vienna, presenting recitals locally and at prominent Dutch locations such as Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, Rotterdam's de Doelen, and Utrecht's Muziekcentrum Vredenburg. During 2008, Krijgh secured two premier awards in the Queen Christina Competition, marking the onset of numerous significant competitive successes. Her 2011 Asian tour included distinctive destinations like Vietnam. Also that year, her initial Capriccio album, titled The French Album, marked her recording introduction. Enrollment at the Kronberg Academy as a Young Soloist took place in 2013, where she obtained a Casals Scholarship and received instruction from Frans Helmerson while persisting with lessons from Lilia Schulz-Bayrova in Vienna.
Towards the conclusion of the 2010s, Krijgh gained recognition throughout Europe as a notable emerging cellist. She performed concertos alongside the Munich Philharmonic, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, London Philharmonic, and further distinguished groups, while becoming a regular participant at European summer festivals. As a dedicated ensemble musician, she affiliated with the Artemis Quartet starting in 2019. Her recorded output proves extensive for an artist of her age. Additional releases appeared on Capriccio prior to her engagement with Deutsche Grammophon. The 2019 debut on that company, Vivaldi, involved Candida Thompson directing the Amsterdam Sinfonietta. Krijgh documented the 2021 recital collection Silent Dreams featuring pianist Magda Amara on Deutsche Grammophon. Returning to the Orfeo label in 2024, she participated in the Triple Concerto for violin, cello, and bayan performed by the NDR Radiophilharmonie led by Andrew Manze.
