Harvey Andrews entered the world on May 7, 1943, in Birmingham, England, and had already developed an interest in singing during his early years, though exposure to American folk traditions came only after he reached college. In 1964 he started performing at a folk venue run by the Ian Campbell Folk Group, followed a year later by a guest slot on an EP alongside folk revivalist Martin Carthy. Teaching occupied most of his time through the closing years of the 1960s, yet he managed to issue his first solo long-player, Places & Faces, in 1970. That same year’s appearance at the Cambridge Folk Festival built anticipation around a second collection, and Writer of Songs performed strongly upon its 1972 release. The next twelve months found him on the road with art-rock ensemble Focus while he finished work on his third album. During 1975 Andrews took part in the BBC television program The Camera and the Song, and he also joined guitarist Graham Cooper on the album Fantasies From a Corner Seat. In 1982 he established the Beeswax imprint, which allowed him to issue fresh material and reissue earlier recordings from his catalog.
