Biography
Hattie Burleson, a Texas jazz and blues vocalist, cut four tracks during an October 1928 session held in Dallas, TX, for Brunswick Records. She returned to the studio two years afterward to record three additional sides in Grafton, WI, for Paramount Records. Information about her personal history stays sparse, aside from her residence in Dallas’s celebrated Deep Ellum neighborhood, where she ran a dancehall for a period. “Sadie’s Servant Room Blues” remains her best-known number, recounting the extended shifts and low wages faced by domestic workers.
