Hazel Miller entered the world in Louisville, where Nancy Wilson left a deep mark and Aretha Franklin proved an even stronger force. Local appearances that fused blues and jazz with gospel and soul soon drew attention. Her initial major opportunity arrived in 1982 when she recorded the official song for the city of Louisville. Two years later she set out with her two children for Los Angeles in hopes of advancing her career, yet the rental truck failed in Denver, Colorado, and she decided to remain. An alliance with Big Head Todd & The Monsters placed her in the group’s regular lineup and carried her on tours across the globe. In 1992 she issued her first recording, the cassette Finally, which included covers of John Lennon and Otis Redding songs. Live At The Fox appeared in 1995, the same period in which she earned the Westword Readers’ Poll designation “Best Blues/R’n’B Band” for three consecutive years. After opening for Herbie Hancock, Bob Weir, Buddy Guy, Mel Torme, James Taylor, and Julian Lennon among others, Miller released I’m Still Looking in 2000. She has also entertained United States soldiers overseas and taken the stage in The Vagina Monologues.
