Electronic music often strikes outsiders as indistinguishable from one track to the next, yet Dave Einmo’s Head Like a Kite project drew in listeners far beyond the usual keyboard-and-drum-machine audience through an immediately accessible premise. Formerly the guitarist in Seattle’s experimental indie outfit Sushirobo, Einmo found his spark in a collection of super-8 home movies his parents had shot during his childhood in the late ’70s. Treating those reels both as creative stimulus and as raw material for audio sampling, he booked time at a Chicago studio alongside producer Brian Deck—known for his work with Modest Mouse and Iron & Wine—and laid down foundational keyboard parts while the films played, aligning each passage with their quick-cut rhythms. Over those foundations, Einmo and Deck piled an eclectic mix of electronic textures and uncommon acoustic sounds, then brought in additional musicians including Darius Minwalla of the Posies, Clay Martin from Sushirobo, and Asya from the preteen indie duo Smoosh to contribute drums and other instrumentation. The sessions yielded Random Portraits of the Home Movie, issued in spring 2006, after which Einmo toured with the films projected behind him as he performed.
