Often celebrated as Sweden’s pioneering heavy metal act, Heavy Load came together in Stockholm in 1976 when brothers Ragne, handling vocals and guitar, and Styrbjörn Wahlquist, on drums and vocals, formed the group. Joined by bassist Dan Molén, they issued their first full-length effort, Full Speed at High Level, in 1978, only for the independent label behind it to collapse. Three years later the band resurfaced on the self-established Thunderload Records with the Metal Conquest EP, now featuring guitarists Eddie Malm and bassist Torbjorn Ragnesjo alongside the founding siblings. The follow-up LPs Death or Glory in 1982 and Stronger Than Evil in 1983 quickly cemented the quartet’s “glorious metal” approach, a hybrid that blended the mock-heroic excess of Spinal Tap with the earnest proto-power and speed-metal intensity of Manowar. Listeners remained uncertain how to receive the sound, and with modest commercial returns the lineup disbanded after issuing the 1985 single “Monsters of the Night.” A short-lived reunion in 1987 yielded further studio recordings that stayed unreleased, after which the Wahlquist brothers shifted focus to production work for other artists.
