Biography
The improvisational unit Hedvig Mollestad Weejuns unites guitarist Mollestad with organist Ståle Storløkken of Supersilent and drummer Ole Mofjell, whose affiliations include Brute Force and Nypan. Its virtuosic, dynamic approach merges prog-rock, electric jazz, fusion, psychedelia, and additional strains via collective improvisation.
Although group spontaneity had long formed a central element in her guitar work, Mollestad turned toward more structured endeavors after 2020. Tempest Revisited emerged from a meticulous reworking of a ballet by Norwegian composer Arne Nordheim in partnership with an orchestra, whereas the 2022 release Maternity Beat arose from sessions with the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra. Restlessness prompted a search for greater liberty and fresh artistic bearings in early 2023. Bypassing any reunion of her established touring and recording group, she recruited keyboardist/producer Ståle Storløkken on organ together with improv scene enfant terrible Ole Mofjell on drums, thereby forming a new improvising trio. Their sessions wove jazz and fusion together with prog-rock, dark ambient, and post-psych, employing an adventurous textural range and measured dynamics within open-ended musical dialogue. After devising a cue-based set list, the musicians began performing and subsequently captured those spontaneous concerts. Rune Grammofon released the resulting self-titled double album in September, its contents drawn directly from the live recordings.
