Biography
Throughout his life Herzogenberg remained a close companion of Brahms, trained under Felix Otto Dessoff, established the Bach Society of Leipzig, and served as professor of composition at the Hochschule fur Musik in Berlin. Earlier works by Bach and Schutz left a clear mark on his own output. Wagner guided his handling of orchestration, while Schumann and Brahms shaped his piano writing. He championed the geist in Protestant church music, an outlook reflected most strongly in the derived structures and settings of his sacred choral compositions.
