Biography
Hello From Waveland draws on the classic power pop approach of Big Star while pulling in sonic touches from Bob Mould, R.E.M., and the Replacements. Straightforward rock, psychedelic country, and sweeping orchestral layers are woven together to produce music of lasting emotional depth that reflects everyday life across America.
Singer-songwriter Michael Jaworski, after spending years in several Omaha, Nebraska groups, relocated to Seattle and there connected with guitarist John Randolph. The two began working in Jaworski’s basement, and by the winter of 2001 Hello From Waveland had taken shape. Bassist Doran Bastin and drummer Mat Mathews were brought in to round out the quartet, after which the band immediately started laying down tracks for its first album. The resulting release, Strangeways, moves between lean, gritty settings and expansive pop statements, all shaded by a homespun warmth that recalls Wilco circa Summerteeth.
