Hellwitch issued their mysteriously titled first full-length, Syzygial Miscreancy, during 1990, though the band’s origins trace to 1984. That year, vocalist and guitarist Patrick Ranieri teamed with drummer Harry Tyler to capture the single-track Nosferatu demo inside Ranieri’s Gainesville, Florida apartment living room. Subsequent demos emerged over the following years and spread through tape-trading networks in the metal underground, tracing the band’s evolving technical thrash/death metal sound across shifting personnel. When Syzygial Miscreancy appeared, the Fort Lauderdale-based lineup consisted of Ranieri alongside drummer Joe Schnessel and bassist Tommy Mouser. By the 1991 Terraasymmetry EP, second guitarist J. Pierce and bassist Jesse Trevino had come aboard. Death metal producer Scott Burns helmed both releases. Insufficient sales ended the group’s run, leading Ranieri to disband after additional demos, with only sporadic reunion performances until the 2005 EP The Epitome of Disgrace surfaced.
