Biography
Andriessen pursued his musical education at the Amsterdam Conservatory before launching his career as an organist in Haarlem, where he followed his father into the post. From there he moved on to serve as organist at Utrecht Cathedral while also instructing on the instrument at the Roman Catholic School for Church Music. In time he took on leadership roles as head of the Utrecht conservatory, director of the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, and professor of music history at Nijmegen University. His compositions encompassed numerous pieces for Catholic liturgical use along with four symphonies, select chamber works, and vocal songs. The music reflects a contemplative lyricism marked by improvisational qualities, an aspect for which Andriessen himself was widely recognized.
