After training at the Paris Conservatoire, Büsser captured the Prix de Rome in 1893. Returning to the capital, he took up the baton first at the Théâtre du Château d'Eau and soon afterward at the Opéra-Comique. The Academy admitted him in 1938 to the chair formerly held by Gounod. His principal output consisted of stage works written in the French nineteenth-century manner, notable for their polished orchestration and technical refinement. The lyric drama Colomba, introduced in Nice in 1921, met with immediate acclaim.
