Henrik Appel's raw and intense singing, paired with his garage-flavored songs drawing from the 1960s, grew out of Stockholm's punk and garage-rock resurgence. His initial solo outing, the guitar-driven Burning Bodies, appeared in 2018, after which he broadened the sonic palette on the 2021 follow-up Humanity. A more spontaneous approach shaped 2024's Shadows, captured live with a four-piece lineup.

In the mid-2010s he handled bass duties for Martin Savage Gang while fronting the garage-rock group Lion's Den, prior to stepping out with his own recordings. Working again in Stockholm alongside producer Martin Ehrencrona (Refused, HOLY), he issued his debut full-length Burning Bodies on PNKSLM in the summer of 2018. Once Lion's Den disbanded, he reunited with Ehrencrona to deliver Humanity on the same imprint in early 2021, enlisting several musicians from the first album such as backing vocalist and co-lyricist Emma Lind.

Seeking a less polished, more organic result, Appel brought fresh material to the studio alongside drummer/pianist Carl-Johan Groth, bassist Rickard Folke, and Ehrencrona, who added woodwinds during exploratory rehearsals and tracking. Echoes of Bob Dylan, the Velvet Underground, and Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds surfaced more prominently throughout the finished Shadows. Issued by PNKSLM in November 2024, the album featured a rendition of Digital Leather's 2014 track "Box of Metal Emotions" plus, for the first time, two original songs in Swedish.
