Biography
Henry Wagons, frontman for Australia's boisterous country-rock band Wagons, pursued the shadowy corners of Americana through his own projects. Although the group earned widespread critical praise for multiple albums released at home and first reached U.S. listeners with the 2011 album Rumble, Shake and Tumble, Henry's solo work began almost unintentionally. After the band finished its tour behind Rumble, Shake and Tumble, he returned to Melbourne and fell ill. Rather than recover, he began writing new material. Once he had tracked most of the songs in his home studio, he brought in an impressive roster of guest vocalists—including the Go-Betweens' Robert Forster and the Kills' Alison Mosshart—to perform Lee Hazlewood-inspired duets. The sessions produced the 2013 mini-album Expecting Company?. That same year also saw the release of the live EP Upstairs at United 9, recorded at Nashville's United vinyl pressing plant. Wagons resurfaced in 2014 with Acid Rain and Sugar Cane, an album co-produced by the Bad Seeds' Mick Harvey. For his 2016 full-length solo debut After What I Did Last Night..., Henry Wagons headed to Nashville to record with producer Skylar Wilson and several of the city's leading Americana musicians.
