During the latter part of the 1970s, Herman Kelly & Life contributed to the TK Records domain centered in Miami by cutting tracks for both its Alston and Electric Cat imprints. The funky percussion break in their 1978 release "Dance to the Drummer's Beat" turned it into an essential track for pioneering hip-hop DJs, leading to extensive sampling in subsequent years. The group issued just one album, Percussion Explosion! in 1978, which incorporated the tracks "Who's the Funky DJ" and "Do the Handbone" that had appeared as 12" single sides.
