Formed in Chicago during January 1997, Heroic Doses brought together musicians whose prior projects suggested an indie supergroup. Five Style guitarist and American Standard vocalist Bill Dolan joined Euphone drummer Ryan Rapsys along with successive bassists, and the unit traveled extensively before laying down tracks for a self-titled debut. Sub Pop issued that album in June 1998. Early lineups featured the Jesus Lizard’s David Wm. Sims and acquaintance Kurt Niesman on bass. When the group entered the studio for the 1998 release Heroic Doses, C-Clamp bassist Nick Macri supplied support. Macri appears on seven of the thirteen largely instrumental tracks, with Dolan and Rapsys handling the remaining material themselves. Matt Lux later assumed the bass position from Macri.
