High Priest

In the closing years of the 1990s, as independent rap began to dismantle genre conventions, the avant-garde hip-hop trio Antipop Consortium—fronted by High Priest alongside Beans and M. Sayyid—extended those possibilities by folding glitch and IDM textures into their b-boy stance. The group built a loyal audience through tours alongside Radiohead and DJ Shadow, yet disbanded in 2002. A few years afterward High Priest reunited briefly with M. Sayyid to launch Airborn Audio, which issued Good Fortunes on Ninja Tune in early 2005. While that partnership was active he also cut several solo 12-inch singles for Sound-Ink, but his first proper solo album, Born Identity, appeared only in February 2007. The track “Keep Time” from that LP features contributions from members of the experimental rock outfit TV on the Radio.
