Biography
The Birmingham-based Higher Intelligence Agency consists of DJ and musician Bobby Bird alongside occasional partner Dave Wheels. Their sound occupies a space bridging ambient and experimental techno, where breakbeat and electro-derived rhythms meet a melodic and harmonic foundation that leans song-oriented in most recent output. Established in 1992, the project originated as a live experiment at Bird’s Oscillate events, which introduced early audiences to Autechre, Orbital, Mixmaster Morris, and Scanner. Over time it developed into a sustained creative entity, issuing two albums together with an equal number of EPs. Although less prolific than many contemporaries, HIA consistently prioritizes refined production and careful construction across its catalogue. Beyond regular touring and continued Oscillate programming, the group has undertaken commissioned pieces for museums and festivals. While the pair remain committed to joint work, Bird now steers most HIA activities as Wheels concentrates on solo material; Bird has also supplied remixes for Freeform and Obconic. Two 1996 collaborations yielded separate albums—one with Frankfurt’s Deep Space Network, titled Deep Space Network Meets Higher Intelligence Agency and issued on DSN’s Source label, the other with Biosphere’s Geir Jenssen, titled Polar Sequences and released on Beyond. A further series, S.H.A.D.O. with Pete Namlook, commenced in 1997 and continued in 1999.
