Hobson's Choice came together in Charlottesville, VA during 2001, drawing equally from timeless pop and rock traditions alongside the early-2000s resurgence of new wave sounds. The founding members included Brian Spreng on drums, Matt Cook handling bass, Andrew Leahey providing vocals and guitar, plus Jim Thomson on guitar and vocals; through numerous hometown performances and independently funded tours across the region, they built a solid local following. In the autumn of 2003, keyboardist Evan Smith, a Charlottesville resident and University of Virginia classmate, became part of the ensemble, prompting a short-term move to Richmond, VA for the purpose of capturing their first album. Released in January of the next year, 3:10 quickly exhausted its initial run of copies over the ensuing months. Nevertheless, the ensemble dissolved without fanfare by the summer of 2005, as multiple participants moved northward to New York while Thomson later emerged playing lead guitar in Le Loup.
