A songwriting and production team later enshrined in the Hall of Fame united brothers Brian and Eddie Holland with Lamont Dozier. Berry Gordy assembled the three in the early 1960s once it became clear that Eddie Holland would not sustain a career as a front-line performer. Their catalog of memorable singles for Motown artists stretches on and on, encompassing “Where Did Our Love Go,” “Baby Love,” “Reach Out I’ll Be There,” “Standing in the Shadows of Love,” “This Old Heart of Mine,” “Nowhere to Run,” “I’m a Road Runner,” and dozens more. Until their departure in 1968, the team supplied material and studio craft to the Supremes, Junior Walker & the All-Stars, the Four Tops, Martha & the Vandellas, the Isley Brothers, and the Elgins.

Relocating from Detroit to Los Angeles, the trio established the Hot Wax and Invictus imprints. Early-1970s chart successes on those labels arrived via Freda Payne, the Chairman of the Board, Laura Lee, 100 Proof (Aged in Soul), and the Honey Cone. Additional production work was undertaken for Dionne Warwick, and the partners themselves reached the singles chart with “Why Can’t We Be Lovers” in 1973. When Lamont Dozier launched a solo career, the longstanding alliance dissolved. Invictus continued operating until 1977, while Brian Holland handled production duties for New York Port Authority.
