Collin Ruffino and David Gross formed the Brooklyn-based electronic rock duo Home Video. Their initial encounter occurred during a high school art class in 1997, where Ruffino exposed Gross—who had focused solely on classical music—to acts including Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, and Massive Attack. Gross quickly became the keyboardist in Ruffino's existing band. Despite attending separate colleges, the pair maintained contact and collaborated on music during vacations. Upon completing their studies, they reconvened in New York, adopting the name Home Video and commencing songwriting in the winter of 2003. In 2004, Warp issued the duo's initial pair of EPs. Following a joint performance in London, Blonde Redhead invited Home Video to accompany them on a three-week North American tour. Additional support slots came with Pinback, Radio 4, and His Name Is Alive. October 2006 saw Defend Music put out the band's first full-length album, No Certain Night or Morning.
