Biography
Though presented as a singular endeavor, Honey Tongue nevertheless amounted to a duo of accomplished players frequently eclipsed by their work elsewhere: singer, guitarist, and cellist Josephine Wiggs, previously of the Perfect Disaster and the Breeders, alongside drummer Jon Mattock, known from Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized. Wiggs first encountered Mattock toward the end of Spacemen 3’s run, contributing cello to sessions for Playing with Fire whose results remained unreleased at the time. The pair maintained contact while pursuing commitments with their primary groups, Mattock often left idle during Jason Pierce’s protracted remixing and re-recording of Lazer Guided Melodies, a pattern that would recur across Spiritualized’s output. In early 1992 Mattock stepped away to join Wiggs at a Manchester studio alongside producer and engineer Audu Obaje; together they tracked and issued Nude Nudes, an album that marked Wiggs’s first opportunity to sing lead throughout an entire record. No further Honey Tongue releases appeared under that name, yet the identical lineup, Obaje included, later reconvened as the Josephine Wiggs Experience for Bon Bon Lifestyle.
