The signature sound associated with Houston blues legend Hop Wilson centered on slide guitar blues carrying an Elmore James influence, delivered via an eight-string table steel guitar lacking pedals. A strictly local figure, Wilson cut material only sporadically and refused to tour. Although he also delivered strong down-home blues on a standard electric guitar and possessed a commanding voice, his distinctive slide work left a lasting mark on later artists that included Johnny Winter and Jimmie Vaughan.

As a youngster Wilson acquired skills on both guitar and harmonica. At age 18 he obtained his initial steel guitar and started performing in Houston juke joints and clubs. Military service during World War II halted his musical activities. Following discharge from the Army he committed to a professional blues path, joining Ivory Semien’s band for shows throughout the late ’50s. In 1957 Wilson and Semien cut several sides together for Goldband Records.

Not until 1960 did Hop Wilson helm his own recording dates, after signing with the Ivory label. He remained with that company for just two years, completing his last sessions in 1961. Thereafter Wilson devoted himself to appearances at neighborhood clubs and bars around Houston. He kept playing locally until his death in 1975.
