Biography
Hailing from Stevens Point, Wisconsin, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades formed as a lively five-piece acoustic roots ensemble whose sound skirts the edges of bluegrass, old-time, folk, and country traditions. The group’s core members—David C. Lynch on harmonica, accordion, and spoons; Russell Pedersen on banjo and fiddle; Adam Greuel on guitar and Dobro; Sam Odin on double bass; and Collin Mettelka on fiddle and mandolin—first connected during an impromptu late-night college jam, where their instant rapport prompted them to gather enough songs for the band’s 2012 debut album, Another Round. After finishing school in 2013, they issued the follow-up This Old Town and launched consistent road work that eventually placed them on the national festival circuit alongside established acts such as Yonder Mountain String Band, the Infamous Stringdusters, and Trampled by Turtles. Their third effort, Middle Western, surfaced in 2015 and paid tribute to the band’s Wisconsin origins while celebrating an affinity for the natural world. To record their fourth album, the musicians convened at Minnesota’s Pachyderm Studios—famous as the site where Nirvana cut In Utero—and enlisted Trampled by Turtles frontman Dave Simonett as producer, resulting in 2018’s The Ode.
