Hostyle Gospel distinguishes itself among Christian rap acts through an aggressive approach to conveying their religious convictions. Originating from Champaign in central Illinois, the ensemble came together in 2003 under the co-founding efforts of Raynard Glass, known as Proverb, and Demetrius Morton, known as King Soloman, both of whom had prior involvement with Elite M.O.C. Fontaine Pizza, performing as Big Job, became part of the collective in 2005, after which additional personnel were incorporated to handle tasks like production, graphic design, and website management. On their own Hostyle Gospel Ministries imprint, the group has issued four albums: Let Me at Em in 2007, Immortal Combat in 2011, Desperation in 2013, and Hostyle Takeover in 2016. A number of mixtapes have also appeared alongside these releases. Despite operating independently, Hostyle Gospel has engaged in numerous joint projects with fellow musicians, such as John Givez, whose input appears on the insightful "Skittles & Iced Tea," which delves into issues of systemic racism along with deaths of people of color at the hands of both civilians and law enforcement.
