Biography
In 2006, House & Parish came together in Brooklyn, drawing from participants in the early-'90s hardcore revival to craft an atmospheric indie rock sound shaped by Britpop and shoegaze. John Herguth, the band's singer and guitarist, had earlier led the Love Scene, a group whose Wilco-inspired style secured a deal through Nirvana's A&R representative, Mark Kates. Following the Love Scene's abrupt dissolution that same year, Herguth teamed up with guitarist Jason Gnewikow, once of the Promise Ring, bassist Scott Winegard from Texas Is the Reason, and drummer Brian Malone of the Gloria Record. They promptly recorded with Ian Love, the ex-guitarist from Rival Schools, handling production duties, which led to the November 2007 release of their One, One-Thousand EP and plans for a full-length album the next year.
