In the opening years of the new millennium, duos relying solely on guitar and drums had become a familiar sight thanks to acts such as the White Stripes, the Black Keys, the Kills, and the Evens. Yet when Bryan Harvey and Johnny Hott established House of Freaks in Richmond, Virginia, during 1986, the concept of a pair performing without a bassist stood out as novel. Drawing their moniker from an antique circus poster, the pair crafted music rooted in lean blues and folk-rock arrangements driven by Hott's powerful percussion and Harvey's dense guitar playing.

They relocated to Los Angeles and secured a deal with Rhino Records, issuing the single "Bottom of the Ocean" toward the end of 1987 before unveiling their first full-length effort, Monkey on a Chain Gang, in the early months of 1988. Critical acclaim and airplay on college stations greeted the release, paving the way for the more refined Tantilla in 1989, which incorporated keyboard contributions from Marty McCavitt.

A shift to Giant, a Warner Bros. imprint, brought their third album Cakewalk in 1991, but it failed to resonate with critics or buyers, prompting a break. Harvey and Hott resurfaced in Gutterball, an alternative rock ensemble led by Steve Wynn that produced a pair of records in 1993 and 1995. House of Freaks also issued the independent EP Invisible Jewel that same year, marking their final output before a formal dissolution in 1995.

Subsequently, Hott collaborated with Sparklehorse, Cracker, and Lauren Hoffman. Harvey cut a solo album in 1997 that remained unreleased, and having grown weary of the road, he returned to Richmond where he performed sporadically with NrG Krysys while prioritizing family life. On the last day of 2005, he appeared with the group at a New Year's Eve concert in his hometown. The next morning, Harvey, his wife, and their two daughters were killed in their home by a pair of thieves whose rampage also took the lives of three additional Richmond residents.
