However originated in the United States in 1977, shaped by progressive rock developments across Europe and jazz fusion currents from America. Its four members were Peter Princiotto on vocals, bass, guitar, piano, and keyboards; Bill Kotapish covering guitar, bass, vocals, and percussion; Bobby Read handling vocals, sax, flute, clarinet, keyboards, piano, and percussion; and Joe Princiotto responsible for drums, cymbals, and percussion. The group issued Sudden Dusk in 1981, an album that showcased their experimental strain of symphonic, jazzy progressive music through frequent time shifts and stylistic turns. Four years afterward they delivered Calling, now augmented by Don Berkemeyer on vocals, bassoon, and recorder plus Terresa Gayle on vocals. Although the record followed the same musical direction as its predecessor, the production emerged noticeably glossier. Both Sudden Dusk and Calling surfaced as digitally remastered CDs on Kinesis during the 1990s, then received further reissues with additional mastering—Sudden Dusk in 2009 and Calling in 2010—via North America East Recordings.
