The indie trio from the Northwest known as Hungry Cloud Darkening, noted for its haunting style, formed after multi-instrumentalists and co-songwriters Allyson Foster, Paul Benson, and Nicholas Wilbur moved in 2008 from Nixa, Missouri, and Mountain Home, Arkansas, settling in Anacortes, Washington’s lively music scene. Early in the 2010s, these three initiated an analog-only collaborative recording endeavor that echoed the enigmatic seclusion associated with local Anacortes indie group Mount Eerie—where the Hungry Cloud Darkening members later served as touring musicians—and the pop-oriented yet cryptic aesthetics of acts such as Broadcast and Blonde Redhead. Through dedicated joint sessions focused on recording and composition, the project yielded the debut full-length album Dark Cloud at Water in 2011, with the follow-up Glossy Recall arriving in 2014.
