During the early 1990s, if BWP (Bitches With Problems) did not hold the title of hip-hop's most controversial female group, then HWA (Hoes With Attitudes) surely earned that distinction. The group boldly displayed an overtly sexual demeanor—to put it mildly loose in nature—while matching any male rapper in raw vulgarity, which produced scant commercial sales yet drew abundant media coverage, among them an extended piece in The Source plus sharp criticism from figures as varied as Rev. Calvin Butts and filmmaker Spike Lee.
