HYMMJ, a German indie rock outfit known for its atmospheric command, surfaced toward the end of the 2010s bearing a somber sonic identity that merges new wave and contemporary rock with touches of 1970s psych-pop, blues, and jazz. The quartet’s work calls to mind Foals, Tame Impala, Alt-J, and Radiohead. In 2017 they released their first EP, A Potential Cause for Rain, with the follow-up album Nobody Can See Us arriving two years afterward.

Formed in Berlin from the lineup of Sönke-Piet Flucke, Samuel Gestrich, Maximilian Jännerwein, and Elias Weber, HYMMJ put out the early-2017 singles “Guillotine” and “Oasis,” both later included on A Potential Cause of Rain. After building regional momentum, the band attracted broader international attention and soon supported tours by New Pornographers, Starcrawler, Theo Katzman, and INVSN. On the 2019 release Nobody Can See Us they refined their distinctive blend of shadowy indie rock and emotive, new wave-inflected art-pop.
