Emerging from the United States as a five-piece ensemble, I Am Become Death burst onto Boston's hardcore circuit in the first part of the 2010s, propelled by an intensely aggressive sound and lyrics focused on contemporary concerns. Its title originates in a Bhagavad Gita passage that J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist known as the atom bomb's creator, later brought to wider attention. The members include vocalist Kyle Neeson, guitarists Steve Trombley and Oliver Hinds, bassist Erik Wormwood, and drummer Jason Seaver. Their 2014 self-titled EP introduced a style built on throat-shredding screams, distorted fuzz, and pummeling drums. Following a brief pause centered on family priorities and personnel changes, the group resurfaced in 2017 on Magnetic Eye Records with the follow-up Unfortunate Anthems and Songs of No Hope, addressing political unrest, resistance to conformity and the status quo, and featuring the anti-Trump track "Foe."
