Iceburn, later known as the Iceburn Collective, ranks among the sparse assemblies operating inside math rock. Their sound shifts from gentle stretches into harsh, clashing textures that fold in jazz, heavy metal, punk, and classical influences.

Established in Salt Lake City, the band issued its debut Firon in 1992; Caroline Records later reissued the recording. After inking with Revelation Records, Iceburn delivered the four-track double-LP Hephestus in 1993. An EP split with Engine Kid appeared in 1994, followed the same year by Poetry of Fire. Rechristened the Iceburn Collective, the outfit unveiled Meditavolutions in 1996. Conceived as a modular system, the pieces on 1998’s Power of the Lion could be recombined freely or assembled into collages. Drawing partial impetus from quantum mechanics, the musicians tested this collage approach across ensuing concerts. The 2000 release Polar Bear Suit enlarged the lineup to a small orchestra by adding two upright basses, bass clarinet, and bassoon.
